African Lungfish research group

Self release from the cocoon

Although lungfishes are unique in their nature, studies on the African lungfish in Sudan are limited and outdated.

Lungfishes in Sudan are distributed in areas of poor food production. We are studying the lungfish populations in the arid savanna zone. This research group works towards understanding the biology, ecology, physiology, biochemistry, behavior, genetics and molecular biology of the Sudanese lungfishes. The development of appropriate breeding strategies to improve productivity is an important activity of ours as well.

Two species of African lungfshes are present in Sudan: the west African lungfish: Protopterus annectens and the marbled lungfish: Protopterus aethiopicus.

This research group is affiliated with the Department of Zoology at the Faculty of Science.
