About the Central Laboratory

Historically, the Central Laboratory No 2 was established in 2001 at the Department of Chemistry University of Khartoum by the Laboratories Technical Adminsitration (LABOTEAD). It was then afiliated with the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science as its community service branch.

At the Central Laboratory, we provide a lot of services to the scientific community from different specialties. Here we showcase some.

Macro Elemental Analyzer

Macro Elemental Analyzer

Elemental analysis is a process where a sample of some material (e.g., soil, waste or drinking water, bodily fluids, minerals, chemical compounds) is analyzed for its elemental and sometimes isotopic composition.

Microwave digestion and extraction unit

It completely break down samples such as metals, pharmaceuticals, plants, soil, or food so they are ready for elemental analysis.


Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry

Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an analytical method that combines the features of gas-chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a test sample.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy is a spectroanalytical procedure for the quantitative determination of chemical elements. It is based on absorption of light by free metallic ions.

Gas Chromatography

Gas chromatography is used to separate compounds in a mixture by injecting a gaseous or liquid sample into a mobile phase and passing the gas through a stationary phase. It is used to quantitatively measure compounds.



A spectrofluorometer is an instrument which takes advantage of fluorescent properties of some compounds in order to provide information regarding their concentration and chemical environment in a sample. 

High performance liquid chromatography


High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a technique in analytical chemistry used to separate, identify, and quantify each component in a mixture. It is used in different field including manufacturing.



A lyophilizer executes a water removal process typically used to preserve perishable materials, to extend shelf life or make the material more convenient for transport. Lyophilizers work by freezing the material, then reducing the pressure and adding heat to allow the frozen water in the material to sublimate.

Infra Red spectrophotometer


Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is used to identify materials including organic polymers. it record the relative amount of energy as a function of the wavelength/frequency of the infrared radiation when it passes through a sample.



The flame photometer is employed to determine the concentration of specific metal ions such as potassium, sodium, calcium, lithium, etc. 



Spectrophotometers are used to measure the concentration of a known substance in a solution. It is used in different fields including biochemistry.

The central laboratory is located at the Department of Chemistry building at the Faculty of Science.
